Pet
therapy success
Recently
our guest book had the following entry:
I
have just added a new addition to my family he is a black and tan
bloodhound named Luke he is four months old and the best dog I have
ever owned he will be my partner I am in law enforcement and will be
working with Luke for search and rescue. I also feel a great pull
towards sharing this great dog with others therapy sounds like a
great first job for Luke he has a love and warmth towards all and
feel he will bring big smiles to everyone he meets. This site was recommended
to network with others who are sharing there fury friends and talk
about the best way to introduce Luke to this therapy work if any can
steer me and Luke in the write direction or has any advice on how to
get started please contact me.
It was
answered by me and a good friend by email with the following:
Here
is a gentleman interested in starting his dog in pet therapy. [this
is from my guest book]. Can you Help him ...
Hello Craig, Bob sent me a
link to his guest book and I saw your post. My husband and I have
been doing pet therapy at a local assisted living facility for 7
years with our 2 dogs. So congratulations on your new puppy and your
interest in pet therapy! It is a very fun and rewarding experience
for all. Since he is only 4 months old I am assuming he is in puppy
training?
If not then I would start
there. Our dogs went through private Junior, Intermediate then
Canine Good Citizen classes. After a while we found out about the
local ALF wanting volunteers in their pet program. Another lady
started it and we went to try it out. Our dogs loved it and we
have been doing it ever since. The ALF has graciously put us under
their insurance so we did not have to go out to get our own.
The person in charge is the
Activities Director, so she coordinates the dates and puts the
notice in the newsletter to let the residents know when we all
will be there.
OR: One of my friends
recently got her therapy certification through a trainer she met
at Petsmart. The testing was done at Petsmart.
Here is a link to the organization she
is registered with:
Maybe you can talk to them
and see if they have a program near you?
OR: your vet can recommend
someone in your area.
I will post this on Bob's
website, maybe others will join in the discussion.
Good luck to you and little
Luke!
